Arthur’s Way Heritage Trail

Glenroyal Hotel & Leisure Club is located near the Arthur’s Way Heritage Trail – a breathtakingly scenic 16 km ramble or bike ride through the north-east of Kildare as you follow in the footsteps of the stout maker himself and take in some important historical landmarks along the way. The trail begins where two rivers meet, the Liffey and the Rye, providing stunning views that set the scene for this enchanting journey.

Things to See & Do along the Arthur’s Way Heritage Trail

The Guinness Storehouse is home of the famous Irish stout, but one can delve further and discover its birthplace in the neighbouring County of Kildare. Arthur’s Way Heritage Trail is a historic trail that has people following in the footsteps of Arthur Guinness. The Trail encompasses the life of Arthur Guinness set out in four different stages: Leixlip to Celbridge, Celbridge to Hazelhatch, Hazelhatch to Lyons Estate, before finally finishing up in Oughterard.

The Trail starts in Leixlip, due to this being the starting point for the creation of Guinness. Having surveyed the land, Arthur deemed Leixlip the perfect place for his brewery, equipped with waterways to tow his product to the masses on completion. Moving into Celbridge, trail goers become acquainted with a statue of Arthur in the heart of his hometown, where he spent his childhood and learned the craft of brewing from his father.

From here, one can make their way towards Hazelhatch, where many locals and guests find a seat in ‘The Hazel Hatch Pub’ to enjoy what Arthur spent his life creating, the perfect pint of Guinness. After your ‘pint of plain’, you can make your way towards Lyons Estate and Oughterard to complete the trail.

The trail itself is approximately 16 kilometres long taking close to three hours and thirty minutes to walk. Alternatively, one could decide to cycle this and complete it in one hours and 30 minutes. The trail itself is suitable for normal footwear to be worn, with a mix of footpaths, tracks, roads and canal towpaths to walk.
