Castletown House

Castletown House is Ireland’s earliest and largest Palladian house, a monumental estate set on 500 acres in Celbridge, County Kildare. Construction of this iconic country house was completed in 1722 for William Conolly, the Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. Like many great estates, its fortunes fluctuated over the centuries, but it was saved from potential ruin in the 1960s by the Hon. Desmond Guinness. Following extensive and ongoing restoration work by the Irish Heritage Trust, Castletown stands today as a beautifully preserved snapshot of 18th-century aristocratic life, welcoming thousands of visitors each year.

Things to See & Do

The estate offers a breath-taking glimpse into Ireland’s architectural and social history. Whether you are strolling through the elegant colonnades, or wandering the sprawling parklands, you’ll be immersed in the grandeur of a bygone era. The house itself is a masterpiece of symmetry and design, while the grounds feature historic follies, peaceful riverside paths along the Liffey, and vast open spaces.

A walk through the parklands at Castletown is a perfect family-friendly activity. The paths are largely flat and suitable for all fitness levels, making it accessible for pushchairs, buggies and young children. You can enjoy a short, leisurely loop or a longer walk exploring the full extent of the 500-acre demesne, with the duration entirely depending on your pace and curiosity.
