Royal Canal Greenway
The Royal Canal Greenway is a 130km route of canal towpath stretching from Maynooth to Cloondara in Co Longford. The canal passes from Leixlip to Maynooth and onto Kilcock. Construction of the canal was completed in 1817 but by the 1950’s the canal had fallen into disrepair and was officially closed in 1961. Following extensive restoration work the Royal Canal Greenway was opened to navigation in 2010 reigniting enthusiasm for the triangular route from Dublin to the Shannon via the Royal and Grand Canals.
Explore The Royal Canal
The canal passes through some of Europe’s most beautiful countryside and, whether you are on a boat, bicycle or foot, you’ll have ample opportunity to enjoy it all. The Royal Canal is truly a snapshot of the past. There are bridges dating back over 200 years and buildings in Abbeyshrule that can be traced back to 1200 A.D.
A lovely walk through the heart of the North Kildare countryside, the Royal Canal is very flat and suitable for most fitness levels. This walk is about 7km long and takes between one and a half to two hours, depending on your pace and stops along the way. The entirety of the Royal Canal Greenway is 130km of level towpath, ideal for walkers, runners and cyclists of all ages and stages.
Bring a Picnic on your Greenway Adventure
Maynooth is the ideal location to begin your Royal Canal Greenway adventure. The team at Glenroyal Hotel would also be happy to arrange a picnic for your adventure and fun-filled day out. Before you head out on your adventure, fuel up in Shoda Market Cafe with a delicious breakfast or lunch. The Grab & Go section in Shoda is prefect for picking up a coffee and pre-made sandwich, yoghurt pot or pastry to take with you on the road.
Getting to the Royal Canal Walkway
From the Glenroyal Hotel it is a 6-minute walk to the official Royal Canal Walkway Maynooth marker. From the hotel, head west, turn right toward Straffan Road, take two lefts, and your destination will be on your right. Or if you’d like, you can cut in at the walkway at the sloped bridge in front of Shoda Market Café and start your walk from there.
