The Royal Canal Greenway
The Royal Canal Greenway is 130km of level towpath, idea for walkers, runners and cyclists of all ages and stages. Starting in Maynooth the Greenway follows the 200-year-old canal through Enfield, Mullingar and ending in Cloondara in Longford. Started in Dublin, the work on constructing the canal was completed in 1817. By the 1950's the canal had fallen into disrepair and was officially closed in 1961. Following extensive restoration work, the Royal Canal Greenway was opened to navigation in 2010 reigniting enthusiasm for the triangular route from Dublin to the Shannon via the Royal and Grand Canals. The Royal Canal is truly a snapshot of the past. There are bridges dating back over 200 years and buildings in Abbeyshrule that can be traced back to 1200 A.D.
The Greenway follows along grassy towpaths, gravel and sometimes tarmac canal-side roads making it very safe for all the family. The canal passes through some of Europe's most beautiful countryside and, whether you are on a boat, bicycle or simply on foot, you'll have ample opportunity to enjoy it all. Along the route you will find many cafés, picnic spots, and attractions to fuel your journey. If you want to spend a few days touring along the route you can find a good range of options for overnight accommodation.
Start your trip off at the Glenroyal Hotel in Maynooth at the start of the Royal Canal Greenway. Enjoy a restful night before starting your journey. In Shoda Market Café enjoy a breakfast filled with fresh Irish produce, delicious pastries, and the finest coffee, that will be sure to give you the energy to go all day long. From here you can either walk along the route or hire a bike and spend the day taking in the beauty of the Royal Canal Greenway. When you are finished exploring for the day head back to the hotel to relax in the leisure club before heading out for dinner.
